Flavored vs Unflavored Creatine: Pick the One You'll Drink

By Jon Klipstein, U.S. Army Combat Veteran & Founder of Die Tryin Co.

Science reviewed by Onur Oncer, BS Physiology and peer-reviewed published researcher.

SAME CREATINE, DIFFERENT HABIT

Here's the truth about flavored vs unflavored creatine: the flavor does not change what creatine does. Every tub of Die Tryin Co. Creatine, flavored or Unflavored, carries 5 g of Creatine Monohydrate per scoop and 100 servings. Same molecule, same dose, same job.

What changes your result is whether you take it every day. Creatine works by filling your muscles' creatine stores and keeping them full, and the stores drain when the scoops stop. So the real question is which one you will drink every single day.

Short version: flavored if you drink it straight in water, unflavored if it disappears into a shake, pre-workout or sports drink you already drink.

IF YOU... PICK WHY
Want to drink creatine straight in water Flavored: Healing Potion, Cherry Limeade or Forbidden Fruit It drinks like a drink, which makes the daily scoop easier to keep. Shop Creatine
Already drink a shake, pre-workout or sports drink every day Unflavored It disappears into the drink you already have, like Post Iso, SEND IT 3.0 or Aqua Spike. Rest day? Keep taking it: creatine on rest days.
Take it at work, on the road or in your gym bag Flavored One scoop, water, a shaker, done. No second drink to build.
Fast on water only Unflavored, in plain water No flavor system at all.
Keep forgetting or skipping plain creatine Flavored The scoop you take beats the scoop you skip.

DOES FLAVORED CREATINE WORK THE SAME?

Yes. Flavored creatine is not less effective: the flavor rides along and does not change the creatine. Creatine Monohydrate is close to fully absorbed, less than 1% breaks down to creatinine during digestion, and how well a powder dissolves has no influence on muscle uptake, per a 2021 review in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

Sweetened creatine has been tested directly. In a double-blind trial by Jacobs and colleagues (1997), 26 participants took artificially sweetened Creatine Monohydrate or a sweetener-only placebo. The creatine group raised anaerobic capacity about 9% and lasted 11 seconds longer before exhaustion (130 to 141), and both were still elevated a week after the last dose. A 1999 crossover trial by Miura and colleagues also sweetened the creatine: anaerobic work capacity hit 13.7 kJ on creatine versus 10.9 kJ on placebo. Nobody has run a flavored-versus-unflavored trial, and none is needed: the molecule doing the work is the same.

What flavor does change is scoop weight: a flavored scoop weighs more than the creatine in it, so compare the Creatine Monohydrate line on the panel. Form matters far more than flavor (see Creatine Monohydrate vs. HCL). One format that can quietly shrink your dose cooks creatine hot, acidifies it and holds it in a moist chew for months: creatine gummies. Pre-mixed liquid creatine has the same problem.

CREATINE ONLY WORKS IF YOU TAKE IT

Creatine is not a pre-workout you feel in 20 minutes. It works by saturation: at 3 to 5 g a day, plan on about 4 weeks of daily scoops to fill your muscles (in a muscle-biopsy study, Hultman and colleagues measured a rise of about 20% after 28 days at 3 g a day).

Then the tank drains. Your body breaks down about 1 to 2% of its muscle creatine daily, and once you stop, stores drift back to baseline over roughly 4 to 6 weeks, per the ISSN position stand on creatine. A missed day is not a reset. A missed month is (timing and missed doses: when to take creatine). That is the whole case for flavor: the version you take every day is the version that works.

"Creatine, everybody needs to be taking creatine. Creatine and a multivitamin. Those are the true staples you should be taking daily."
Jon Klipstein, in an interview with The Kurt Locker

The multivitamin half is Daily Essentials. The creatine half is whichever tub you will finish.

FLAVORED OR UNFLAVORED CREATINE: WHO SHOULD PICK WHICH

Taste shapes how much of a nutrition product people actually drink: a 2022 review by Lester and colleagues found exactly that for oral nutrition supplements (in undernourished older adults, not lifters), and in a 2023 survey of 405 athletes and active adults, Carey and colleagues found taste ranked second only to nutrition profile. No creatine trial has split lifters by flavor yet. You don't need one: if plain creatine is the scoop you keep skipping, a flavor you like is a legitimate fix.

  • Pick flavored if: you take it on its own in water, you don't already drink a daily shake or pre-workout, or you carry a scoop to work or in your gym bag with a shaker.
  • Pick unflavored if: it rides in a shake, pre-workout or sports drink you already drink daily, you fast on water only, or you want no sweetener of any kind.

DOES UNFLAVORED CREATINE TASTE BAD?

In lab taste tests, creatine barely registers: Lawless (Chemical Senses, 1979) found it a notably ineffective taste stimulus, and a 2022 sensory study by Tanase and colleagues rated its taste weak even at high concentrations. The real complaint is texture. Creatine dissolves at about 14 g per liter of room-temperature water and only about 6 g near fridge temperature (Jäger and colleagues, 2011). The math: 5 g needs roughly 12 oz of room-temperature water to fully dissolve, and 12 oz of ice water holds only about 2 g. That sand at the bottom is chemistry, not a bad batch, and it still counts.

The fixes: mix in room-temperature water first, then add ice, and swirl down the last sip. Or hide it in juice or a shake. A micronized creatine mixes cleaner with less grit, or pick a flavor. A hard, clumpy tub has pulled in moisture: crystalline creatine stays stable only until it takes on enough water to start dissolving (Uzzan and colleagues, 2009). Keep the lid tight and the scoop dry.

WHAT TO MIX CREATINE WITH

Our label: mix 1 scoop with 10 to 12 oz of water or your favorite sports drink, once daily. What you mix it into does not change how creatine works, so pick what you will actually drink.

Man in a gym holding two Die Tryin Co. Creatine tubs, with text: mix 1 scoop with 10-12 oz of water or sports drink daily
  • Water: what the flavored tubs are built for.
  • Sports drink or electrolytes: on our label. Unflavored disappears into Aqua Spike.
  • Protein shake: unflavored vanishes into a scoop of Post Iso.
  • Pre-workout: SEND IT 3.0 has no creatine on its panel, so your 5 g rides along. It carries caffeine, so read the note below.
  • Coffee or tea: yes (see the FAQ).
  • Milk, yogurt, a smoothie, even protein ice cream: all fair game.

Carbs, or carbs plus protein, have been reported to boost creatine retention (ISSN position stand); food pairings are covered in what to take creatine with. On "never mix creatine with" lists, the one pairing with real research debate is caffeine: a 2022 systematic review of 10 studies (Elosegui and colleagues) found daily caffeine during a creatine loading phase blunted the benefit in some studies but not others. That concern is tied to loading, and a daily 5 g alongside normal caffeine use is common practice. If you take medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding anything.

HOW LONG DOES CREATINE LAST ONCE MIXED?

Short answer: the same day is fine. In the original stability data (Howard and Harris, US 5,968,544, a patent, not peer reviewed), an acidic citrus creatine drink at room temperature held about 99% of its creatine at 8 hours, 96% at 1 day, 88% at 3 days and 58% at 2 weeks. Refrigerated at similar acidity: about 99% after a week. Warmth and acidity speed the breakdown, and the creatinine it becomes does nothing for your training. Dry, plain Creatine Monohydrate powder held steady for over 3 years, even at 104 °F (Jäger's review).

Bottom line: mix it and drink it. A shaker prepped the night before costs you a few percent at most (about 1% at 8 hours, 4% at a full day), not your dose. Prepping days ahead? Fridge it, never a hot car. The same chemistry (acid, heat and water) is why creatine gummies can have a shelf-life problem.

DOES FLAVORED CREATINE HAVE CALORIES OR BREAK A FAST?

Check the Supplement Facts on your flavor: FDA labeling rules (21 CFR 101.9 and 101.36) require a calorie line on a supplement once a serving carries 5 calories or more. No calorie line means a serving comes in under that.

Whether it breaks a fast depends on the fast. If yours is about calories, a serving with no calorie line on its label is not breaking it in any practical sense. If you fast on water only, any flavored drink counts, and unflavored in plain water is the cleanest option. Sweetener-and-insulin research is mixed; if sucralose is your worry, here's what the sucralose research shows. If you fast to manage blood sugar or take diabetes medication, talk to your doctor before adding anything to the fast.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Should I get flavored or unflavored creatine?

Same 5 g of Creatine Monohydrate per scoop either way. Flavored if you drink it alone in water, unflavored if it rides in something you already drink. The one you take every day wins.

Can you mix creatine with coffee?

Yes. Hot liquid dissolves more creatine, about 34 g per liter at 50 °C (122 °F) versus 14 g at room temperature, and early studies served it in hot tea. Heat speeds the breakdown, so drink it then, not hours later.

Does creatine go bad if you leave it in water overnight?

Barely: even in an acidic citrus drink at room temperature, about 99% is still creatine after 8 hours and about 96% after a full day. Fridge anything you prep further ahead.

Is 1 week off creatine bad?

A week off does not empty the tank: stores drift back to baseline over roughly 4 to 6 weeks after you stop, so a week costs you a little, not the whole build. Whether you ever need a planned break is covered in should you cycle creatine.

Is flavored creatine bad for you?

The creatine is the same. The difference is the flavor system, listed under Other Ingredients on the tub's label, so read it if you avoid a specific sweetener or color. The real creatine side effects are covered separately. Supplementing can nudge up creatinine, the blood marker doctors use to check kidney function, so tell your doctor you take creatine before bloodwork. If you have kidney disease, are pregnant, are managing a medical condition or take medication, clear any supplement with your doctor first.

Which flavored creatine is best?

Check three things on any tub: Creatine Monohydrate listed by the gram (not buried in a blend), the creatine per serving (not the scoop weight), and third-party testing. Full checklist: what to look for in a creatine. Ours: 5 g of Creatine Monohydrate per scoop, third-party tested, in Healing Potion, Cherry Limeade, Forbidden Fruit or Unflavored.

READY TO GEAR UP?

  • Creatine: Healing Potion, Cherry Limeade, Forbidden Fruit or Unflavored. 5 g of Creatine Monohydrate per scoop, 100 servings.
  • Post Iso: whey isolate, a clean home for an unflavored scoop.
  • SEND IT 3.0: caffeinated daily-driver pre-workout, no creatine on the panel, so your 5 g stacks on top.
  • Aqua Spike: electrolytes, another home for an unflavored scoop.
  • Daily Essentials: the multivitamin half of Jon's two daily staples.
  • Sportshaker: for the scoop that lives in your gym bag.
