Full disclosure: Onur formulated this product. That is exactly why this post tells you what the research does NOT show, too.
MUSHROOMS FOR LIFTERS, MINUS THE FAIRY DUST
Listen up. You've seen the mushroom coffee crowd on your feed. Soft lighting, linen shirts, somebody whispering about ancient wisdom over a seven-dollar latte. This is not that post, and this is not that product.
Here's the truth: the functional mushroom industry is split in two. On one side, real fruiting-body extracts with measurable active compounds and real human trials behind them. On the other, powdered mycelium grown on grain, which is mostly starch wearing a mushroom name. Most of what sells in this category is the second kind, and the marketing has outrun the science on both.
Shroombiosis is a collab between Die Tryin Co. and Shroombiosis, the company founded by Onur Oncer, our science reviewer and Jon's battle buddy from Afghanistan. Onur built it after doing what most people never do: reading the labels on the big mushroom coffee brands. Proprietary blends, underdosed, overpriced, and sold on hype to people who were never given the tools to check. Shroombiosis is the answer to that, and the same reason Jon built Die Tryin Co. Seven organic mushrooms, all fruiting-body, all dual-extracted, in a white chocolate mocha cocoa drink. Below is what's in it, what named human trials actually found, and just as important, where the evidence stops.
| MUSHROOM | DOSE PER SCOOP | WHAT THE SCIENCE SAYS | ATHLETE RELEVANCE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lion's Mane | 1,000 mg | A double-blind pilot found faster processing speed 60 minutes after a 1.8 g dose, plus a stress-reduction trend over 28 days of use | Focus and mind-muscle connection, long game |
| Cordyceps | 1,000 mg | Read the species line before the results: those VO2max and time-to-exhaustion trials used Cordyceps militaris at 4 g in a blend. This scoop is Paecilomyces hepialid at 1 g, a different species with no human trial of its own | Conditioning and aerobic capacity over time |
| Reishi | 500 mg | An 84-day double-blind RCT in healthy adults found improved immune-cell markers: T cells, natural killer cell activity, and IgA | Evening wind-down, immune support, recovery routine |
| Chaga | 500 mg | Carries the fungal beta-glucans a 34-RCT systematic review found to be genuinely immunomodulating; chaga-specific human trials are still ahead | Immune support during hard training blocks |
| Turkey Tail | 500 mg | Its beta-glucans fall under the 34-RCT systematic review's demonstrated immunomodulation effect; turkey-tail-specific human trials are still ahead | Gut resilience under training stress |
| Poria | 500 mg | Documented use spanning more than 2,500 years; appears in 25 of China's 100 official classical formulas. Lab research with human gut microbiota shows its polysaccharides act as a prebiotic, and animal research points to GABA-A signaling behind its traditional calm reputation | Gut, immune, and wind-down depth. A full standalone serving's worth |
| Tiger Milk | 300 mg | A 2020 peer-reviewed review catalogs its polysaccharides, complete protein, and antioxidant and prebiotic activity in lab research. Human trials: none yet, and we say so | Adds more of the beta-glucans behind the immune layer, plus complete protein. Almost no other blend carries it |

WHY LIFTERS SHOULD CARE ABOUT SOURCING
Most people get this wrong because the label lets them. A mushroom supplement can legally be one of two very different things. The fruiting body is the actual mushroom, the part that grows up and out. Mycelium is the root network underneath, and it's almost always sold ground up together with the grain it was grown on. Test those mycelium-on-grain powders and you find they can run heavy on starch. You're paying mushroom prices for oatmeal filler.
Extraction matters just as much. Mushroom cell walls are built from chitin, the same stuff as crab shells, and your digestion doesn't break it down well. Dual extraction runs the mushroom through both hot water (which pulls the water-soluble compounds like beta-glucans) and alcohol (which pulls the non-water-soluble compounds like triterpenes). Skip either step and you leave half the mushroom locked in the mushroom. And real dual extraction runs on a calendar, not a clock. Weeks of alcohol maceration to pull the triterpenes. Hours of hot-water simmering to break the beta-glucans out of those chitin walls. Then combining both. That timeline is exactly why most brands skip it. Grinding mycelium and grain into a bag takes an afternoon.
Every one of the seven mushrooms in Shroombiosis is organic, fruiting-body, and dual-extracted, and that's printed on the label, not buried in a proprietary blend. Real doses of real ingredients. For scale: the 500 mg of poria in one scoop matches what gets sold elsewhere as an entire standalone product. That standard is the whole reason this product exists.
WHAT THE RESEARCH ACTUALLY SHOWS
Start with endurance, because that's where the data is hardest. A randomized double-blind trial from 2017 gave 28 adults 4 grams per day of a cordyceps-based mushroom blend. After one week: nothing. After three weeks: VO2max improved by about 4.8 ml/kg/min versus under 1 in the placebo group, with time-to-exhaustion gains alongside it. A controlled human trial with a hard performance endpoint, not a mouse study. And it no longer stands alone: a 2026 review of human cordyceps trials concluded the current evidence supports ergogenic and post-exercise recovery effects. The through-line is consistent: the effects show up after weeks of daily use, not on day one.
Lion's mane has real human data too. A 2023 double-blind pilot in 41 healthy adults found a single 1.8 g dose produced measurably faster performance on a Stroop processing-speed task at 60 minutes, and 28 days of use showed a stress-reduction trend that just missed statistical significance. One pilot, not twenty trials, but it is real placebo-controlled data. The honest counterweight: a separate 2025 acute trial (Surendran and colleagues) found no broad cognitive lift from a single 3 g dose. Read together, the science says lion's mane is a consistency play, not a light switch, and we're telling you that instead of cropping it out.
Now the shared engine most mushroom brands never explain. Beta-glucans are structural polysaccharides built into mushroom cell walls, and your immune cells carry receptors that recognize and respond to them. That mechanism is not speculation: a systematic review of 34 randomized controlled trials found immunomodulation is the primary demonstrated effect of fungal beta-glucans in humans, with a strong tolerability record across studies. That engine runs through reishi, chaga, turkey tail, and poria alike. Reishi owns the sharpest single data point: an 84-day double-blind RCT in healthy adults found reishi beta-glucans improved immune-cell markers, including T cells, natural killer cell activity, and IgA. Healthy adults, placebo-controlled, markers moved. That's the whole sentence.
Poria is the ingredient we used to call a long shot. The current science says otherwise. It's been documented in traditional Chinese medicine since roughly 215 BCE, more than 2,500 years of recorded use, and appears in 25 of China's 100 official classical formulas. And in 2025, lab research in a Nature-portfolio journal fermented poria polysaccharides with human gut microbiota samples and found the microbiota readily used them: short-chain fatty acid production climbed, beneficial bacteria increased, and potentially problematic species declined. Lab research on human gut samples, not a human trial, and we'll say that plainly. Animal research also points to GABA-A receptor signaling behind poria's traditional calm reputation (a 2022 sleep study in mice). The long shot grew up.
Now the limitations, stated once instead of hedged into every sentence. These are mostly small studies. The endurance trial used 4 grams per day of a blend built on a different cordyceps species than the one in this scoop, so treat it as evidence about cordyceps mushrooms broadly, not this exact extract. The lion's mane trials used 1.8 to 3 grams versus the 1 gram here. Nobody has run a trial on this exact formula, and we're not claiming it replicates any of those outcomes. What the studies agree on is the timeline: when these mushrooms move a marker, they move it over weeks of consistent use, not minutes. Anyone promising a one-scoop transformation is marketing, not science.
WHAT IT IS NOT
This is not a pre-workout. No added caffeine, no stimulants. It will not hit like Project M777 and it is not trying to. You'll also see the word "adaptogen" slapped on products like this everywhere. Know this going in: adaptogen is a marketing word, not a clinical one, and we don't lean on it. It also doesn't replace anything that actually built your physique. Creatine Monohydrate, protein, sleep, and programming come first, and if those aren't squared away, start with the ultimate guide to recovery before you spend a dollar on mushrooms. Basics beat hype. This is a supporting-cast supplement, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a miracle.
THE GUT ANGLE
Hard training stresses more than your muscles. Long sessions, high volume, and heavy conditioning all put load on your digestive system, which is why Shroombiosis carries a dedicated gut layer: 750 mg of acacia fiber, 100 mg of the postbiotic BPL1, and the DE111 probiotic. Take the acacia straight: the human dose-response trial on it (Calame and colleagues, 2008) tested 5, 10, 20 and 40 g and landed on 10 g as the optimum, it never tested anything below 5 g, and it was run by the gum’s own supplier. Our 750 mg is a fraction of that. It is a substrate layer aimed at the bacteria you already have, not a fiber dose, and we are not going to dress it up as one. On DE111: in human ileostomy subjects the spores survived the stomach and germinated in the small intestine inside three hours (Colom 2021, run by the strain’s own maker), while in healthy adults its gut-symptom and gut-barrier markers came back largely unaffected (Freedman 2021). You should know both. BPL1 is not a mystery strain: a double-blind human RCT studied this exact strain, including its heat-killed postbiotic form, and found effects on metabolic-health biomarkers. Prebiotic, probiotic, postbiotic, one scoop. Every one of those has human research behind the ingredient. Not every one of them at the dose we use, which is exactly why the doses are printed above. It's designed to support gut health, and your gut drives more of your training than most lifters want to admit.
The gut and immune systems are roommates, and hard training blocks are exactly when both get tested. Reishi brings the beta-glucans covered by that 34-trial systematic review, which studied Ganoderma lucidum among its sources and did not study turkey tail or chaga. Poria brings polysaccharides from the gut-microbiota work above, and that work is in a lab, not in people. The fiber, probiotic and postbiotic layer comes at the same system from another angle. Deliberate design, not a kitchen-sink accident. One more reason to care: gut-brain axis research (Cryan and Dinan's work) keeps tying digestive health to mood and drive, and roughly 90 percent of your body's serotonin is made in the gut (Yano 2015, Cell). For the bigger picture, supporting your immune system through hard training is worth understanding on its own.
HOW TO RUN IT
One scoop, every day, judged over weeks. How Onur formulated it to be taken: first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Start with a half scoop for the first few days to assess tolerance, then move to a full scoop. Remember the endurance trial: week one showed nothing, week three showed results. Give it a full tub, 30 servings, before you decide anything. Skipping days and expecting effects is how people conclude supplements "don't work" when the real answer is they never actually took them.
It's a cocoa drink, not a chalk shot. White chocolate mocha, mixed hot like a mocha or shaken cold, 25 calories, 3 g carbs, 1 g protein per scoop. It fits any macro plan, cutting or bulking, and no caffeine means it slots cleanly morning or evening, including as an evening wind-down. Stack-wise, it plays fine next to everything else you're running. One scoop of Shroombiosis alongside your creatine in the morning, done. Your pre-workout stays your pre-workout.
Mix it however you actually drink things. The Tri-Biotic layer was picked for exactly this: DE111 is a spore-forming probiotic built to survive heat, and BPL1 is a heat-treated postbiotic, so the gut layer holds up in hot coffee, cold coffee, hot water, or cold water. Mixing with water? Use a shaker and shake it hard. And if you see sediment at the bottom, that is normal. That is the fibrous structure of real mushrooms, not a defect. Give it a swirl at the end and drink it all. The sediment is the product.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do mushroom supplements actually work?
More than the skeptics claim, less than the marketers promise. Randomized human trials found endurance gains after three weeks of daily use of a cordyceps-based blend, faster processing speed after lion's mane, and improved immune-cell markers after 84 days of reishi beta-glucans. The catch is the timeline: nearly everything shows up with weeks of daily use, almost nothing from a single dose. Quality decides whether you get any of it, which means fruiting-body extracts at disclosed doses instead of grain filler.
Is this a pre-workout?
No. No added caffeine, no stimulants, no acute kick. It's a daily cocoa drink built for the long game. If you want something to feel before a session, that's what an actual pre-workout is for.
When do you take it?
Onur formulated it for first thing in the morning on an empty stomach: half a scoop to start while you assess tolerance, then a full scoop daily. That said, consistency beats timing, so the best slot is whichever one you'll hit every single day. No caffeine means evening use is completely fine, and the mocha profile works both hot and cold.
Is it vegan?
Yes. Vegan friendly and GMO free, with coconut milk powder for the creaminess instead of dairy, sweetened with monk fruit and stevia instead of sugar.
Does it replace creatine?
Not even close. Creatine Monohydrate is the most-studied performance supplement in existence and nothing in the mushroom world touches its evidence base. Keep taking your creatine. This runs alongside it, not instead of it.
What does "fruiting body" mean?
The fruiting body is the actual mushroom, the part that grows above the surface. The alternative most brands sell is mycelium, the root network, ground up with the grain it grew on, which waters the product down with starch. All seven mushrooms in Shroombiosis are fruiting-body and dual-extracted, and it says so on the label.

| Poria, 500 mg | $15.00 |
| DE111® probiotic, 20 mg | $21.92 |
| BPL1® HT postbiotic, 100 mg | $24.49 |
| Acacia fiber, 750 mg | $0.95 |

Priced to match our doses, not to match a bottle. That is $88.49 less for the same thirty days: $1.67 a day against $4.62. And that comparison uses the cheapest verified option for every single ingredient, not the averages. Against typical prices, the gap gets wider. One more thing: most of those cheapest options do not even verify fruiting-body sourcing, let alone dual extraction. Matching this formula like-for-like on quality would cost more than the table shows. Dose-matched retail pricing, checked August 2026, cheapest verified option per ingredient, several pro-rated from larger containers. Prices in this category move, so these will drift. Retailers unnamed on purpose.
READY TO GEAR UP?
Seven organic, dual-extracted, fruiting-body mushrooms, a prebiotic-probiotic-postbiotic gut layer, and a white chocolate mocha you'll actually want to drink daily. That's Shroombiosis, 30 servings, built by a physiology researcher who put the limitations in the blog post. Not sure where it fits in your stack? Take the quiz and build from the basics out.
